Two New Intel Edison Breakout Boards Aim To Power Your Robot

The tiny, powerful Intel Edison platform has been a bit difficult to interface with. But now two new breakout boards from DFRobot vie to become the robotics community’s must-have Edison connection.

Since its debut a few months ago, the most common ways to work with Edison are two breakout boards available from Intel and the Block System from SparkFun, which seem to be out of stock more often than not. More and more accessories and breakout boards are becoming available; and more and more manufacturing houses are producing their custom approach to solving the difficulty of connecting to the Edison.

The latest two breakout board offerings come from DFRobot, a Chinese based company who offers all sorts of maker-related products. While their new breakout boards may not be the obvious choice for all of your Edison based projects, they certainly should be contenders, especially if you are building a robotics platform.

The Romeo breakout board for Edison

The first new board by DFRobot is the Romeo for Edison.
For those unfamiliar with the Romeo line of boards, they are essentially a line of motor controllers with I/O breakouts to accommodate most basic robotics needs. While there are other boards in the Romeo line, this is the first board to accommodate the 70-pin Hirose header for Intel Edison Looking closely at the board layout above, you’ll notice the Romeo board breaks out header pins in an Arduino UNO Rev. 3 fashion.

DC motor and batter connected to the Romeo breakout

Above is a fine example of how this board is useful in rapid prototyping — the Romeo board easily connects to a battery and DC motor, something that’s not too easy with any individual extant breakout board.
In addition to easy wiring, another great feature is that the board is Open Hardware, with available schematics.

The I/O Expansion Shield for Edison

The second board from DFRobot, the I/O Expansion shield is a more standard breakout board that pins-out familiar Arduino GPIO (General Purpose Input/Output), though in an unfamiliar, linear arrangement  — this, however, is most likely done to keep the dimensions of the board as small as possible.

Unlike the smaller form factor board available from Intel, the DFRobot board populates the header pins for ease and accessibility.

I/O expansion board description

In addition to the low cost of this breakout board — at the time of writing, below $14.00 — it is also Open Hardware, just like the Romeo board, which cost quite a bit more — nearly $75.00.
Both boards are available now, however, DFRobot along with many Chinese distributors is observing the Chinese New Year until February 25th and will not be shipping boards until that date.

Mount MTP Android Device on Linux Crunchbang 11 Waldorf and Debian 7 Wheezy

I found this post on this blog http://roger.steneteg.org/299/mount-mtp-device-on-debian-7-wheezy/

Fully tested on Crunchbang 11 Waldorf 64-bit using Google Nexus 4.

The rest is the post from the said blog :

Today I needed to transfer som pictures from my phone (a Google Nexus 4) to my computer running Crunchbang (based on Debian 7 wheezy). The required packages for this to work has not yet been added to Debian stable to work around this I manually built the required tools from source.

Install required packages
sudo apt-get install libmtp-dev fuse libmtp9 pkg-config libfuse-dev libglib2.0-dev libmad0-dev libid3tag0-dev dh-make autotools-dev

Download source package of mtpfs

*Update*
Thanks to sdio for pointing out how to use the Debian package tools to create a deb file to install and uninstall instead of doing the traditional ./configure; make; make install.

Untar the archive and then use dh_make to convert the source package in a format used by debian packages:
tar zxf mtpfs-1.1.tar.gz
cd mtpfs-1.1
dh_make -s -f ../mtpfs-1.1.tar.gz

Now build the Deb-file using this command:
fakeroot debian/rules binary

The deb-file will be placed in the same directory as the tar-file, to go upp a directory and install the deb-file:
cd ..
sudo dpkg -i mtpfs_1.1-1_amd64.deb

If you want to uninstall mtpfs then run this command:
sudo dpkg --purge mtpfs

Make sure you are a member of the fuse group so that you are allowed mount filesystems in userspace (You will need to relogin or reboot for the group permissions to take effect):
sudo usermod -aG fuse $USER

Create a directory for mounting the device and mount the the device (Plugin the device first)
mkdir myPhone
mtpfs myPhone

When your done you unmount the phone with this command
fusermount -u myPhone

Steam on Crunchbang 11 Waldorf 64-bit

To anyone stumbled on my blog upon searching for the answer, here you go. Added the fglrx driver part for libgl1 multiarch lib.
Credits to parkerlredd on crunchbang forum.

So after a while of searching for the simplest way to do this I think I have found it.
1. If on a 64bit machine enable multiarch
 sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
 sudo apt-get update

2. Download the steam-install-for-wheezy package and install it
 wget https://github.com/GhostSquad57/Steam-Installer-for-Wheezy/raw/master/steam-debian_1.0.0.45-4_all.deb
sudo dpkg -i steam-debian_1.0.0.45-4_all.deb

If it says its missing a package just
sudo apt-get install -f

3. Now before you run steam you need to install the i386 package that provides libgl.so.1 and matches your graphics card

     If on a 64bit system
 ## for nvidia
sudo apt-get install libgl1-nvidia-glx:i386

## for fglrx/ati/amd
sudo apt-get install libgl1-fglrx-glx:i386

     If on 32bit (untested)
 ##for nvidia
sudo apt-get install libgl1-nvidia-gl

## for fglrx/ati/amd
 sudo apt-get install libgl1-fglrx-glx

4. Run "steam-debian", let it download the client, and you should then be presented with the login screen.

5. If you get a terminal window at launch that complains about not having jockey-common run
 sudo /usr/lib/steam/steam-debian-depends.sh

6. Enjoy!

PS: If you just so happen to be running sid you can just run "steam" to open steam. The "steam-debian" script isn't even needed!

Bluestacks For Linux? Genymotion is the answer. A Faster Alternative to Android Emulator.

Assalamualaikum (peace be upon you) my readers. If you are looking for Bluestacks for Linux, there is no such thing (for now maybe?). Good news is, there's another application called Genymotion that can do the same job for you and even more powerful. You might as well use it as an alternative to ADT Device Emulator if you develop Android apps that is.

Genymotion website

Genymotion in CrunchBang Linux

I haven't test it on ADT, but hey, it has plugins for Eclipse too!

Long story short, take a look for what Genymotion has to offer on its website : www.genymotion.com

My opinion? Yes. FASTER speed Genymotion is.

YouTube & Facebook Kena Block? Ini Jawapannya...

Assalamualaikum WBT.

Semoga berjaya!

ncmpc++ & Sonata, Pemain Muzik Linux

Assalamualaikum WBT. Ehem ehem.

Aku sekadar tergelak. Okeh. Semoga beroleh manfaat. Wassalam.

Resizing VirtualBox Virtual Hard Disk (vdi image)

Assalamualaikum WBT. Today I stumbled upon my VirtualBox hard disk problem. I wanted to install Adobe Photoshop CS5 however, the space available was too small for the disk hogged software. I googled around and luckily found a blog as if it was created to solve my not so little problem. Here is the exact url http://www.modhul.com/2008/10/21/re-sizing-a-virtualbox-virtual-disk-image-file/. I will try to make it easier to understand. I am using Crunchbang linux (Statler) as the host and a closed source VirtualBox (I need USB support).

What You Need?
  1. Shut down the Virtual Box that uses the disk you want to resize.
  2. Remove any snapshots you have.
  3. Backup your vdi image (the VirtualBox hard disk).
  4. Download GParted LiveCD iso here.
  5. Create a new larger disk (according to size that you need).
  6. Attach the new created disk to your VirtualBox as slave.
  7. Mount the GParted iso to your VirtualBox.

Next Steps
  • Boot the virtual machine from the mounted ISO – you may need to reconfigure your VirtualBox to ensure that you boot from the CD-ROM drive before the HDD, so change the VirtualBox settings as shown below or hit F12 at boot and change there.

  • During the boot process the gparted Live CD will prompt you to select the correct keymap – if you are using a QWERTY keyboard, simple select the ‘Don’t Touch Kepmap’ option; next, you will be prompted for the language settings to be used – select the appropriate language code, in my case ’02′ for British English; finally, you will be prompted for the X-Windows mode – select ’0′ to automagically start gparted in an X-Windows session.

  • Once gparted starts, you will be presented with a graphical representation of your disks – left-click the left-to-right bar named /dev/sda1 (your primary hard disk that is to be expanded) and then click on the Copy icon.

  • Select the drop-down-box to the right of the tool-bar and select the second (currently empty) disk – /dev/sdb (possibly /dev/hdb in your environment), the graphical representation of your disks will change to show you the second slave disk which is currently empty. Click on the Paste icon.

  • gparted will will prompt you that all data on the new partition will be erased and if you’re happy, subsequently prompt you on how the disk should be formatted. For a Windows environment, select MSDOS (this will give you an NTFS partition, trust me!).

  • gparted will finally present you with a slider dialog indicating the desired size of the new disk. Drag the slider to the right to select the maximum size of the new partition on this new disk (I’d just drag it so the partition consumes the whole disk), as shown in the screenshot below:

  • Click the Apply icon, you’ll be presented with something along the lines of the screenshot below as the contents of the source disk are copied to the new, larger, disk:
  • Once the copy has completed (approx. 35 mins to create a 30Gb disk from an original 20Gb disk), you will need to mark the new disk as bootable (if this is to be a bootable partition – if not, simply skip the next step).

  • To mark the partition as bootable, right-click the graphical representation of the new disk and left-click Manage Flags. In the dialog that appears, select Boot and click Ok to close. gparted will apply the necessary flag and re-scan your disks.

  • Close gparted and click the Exit icon to shutdown the system.

Completing the Re-Sizing
  • Once the virtual machine has powered off, re-configure the hard disks to use the newly created/copied disk as the primary and remove the old primary disk from the system; finally, unmount the System Rescue ISO from the CD-ROM.

  • Power on your new VM and you should be presented with the the usual Windows boot sequence; if you are just presented with a black screen with a flashing cursor at the top left-hand corner of the screen, there isn’t a boot sector on the disk, so restart gparted and add the boot flag as directed above.

  • Hopefully, your virtual machine will start without issue. Windows may perform a check of the disk during boot. Once logged-in, open Windows Explorer and confirm that the newly created drive is the new larger size.

Crunchbang : Perfect Audio in Alienware m11X with OSS

Assalamualaikum WBT. I have been trying to get my sound works simultaneously on this lappy for a few days now until I recently discovered someone said OSS is better than anything else in comparison of sound quality.

I tried ALSA, compiled from scratch with the latest build but I couldn't get it to play many sounds together simultaneously, let say listening to music and playing game at the same time. I also got my hands into PulseAudio even though the majority in Crunchbang community pretty much hate PA. Now, I know why they want to ban PA so much. I tested PA with YouTube, the video lags with no sound at all until I killed the PA server.

I never thought of trying OSS until today and I glad that I found Martin Baselier's blog about changing alsa to OSS4. Once OSS is installed, my audio works like charm. I got simultaneous audio and awesome and crisp quality out of it. However, I lost my volume system tray icon. Crunchbang uses volumeicon (Maato) by default. I ran volumeicon manually and got this error

~$ volumeicon volumeicon: mixer.c:905: snd_mixer_elem_set_callback: Assertion `mixer' failed. Aborted

In Crunchbang forum, the solution is to remove the ~/.config/volumeicon/volumeicon settings file which resulting to this error instead for me.

volumeicon: asound.c:54: asound_get_volume: Assertion `m_elem != ((void *)0)' failed. Aborted

Then I looked into the official site of volumeicon by Matoo. The solution for me was to remove the default volumeicon using sudo apt-get remove volumeicon and reinstall it from source with enable OSS option.

This is how I did it :

1. Download the source from Matoo website.

2. Extract, and install volumeicon from source with --oss-enable option.

./configure --prefix=/usr --oss-enable
make
sudo make install

3. Taraaa ~~~ You got your volumeicon back.

Thank You to all the contributors of OSS, Volume Icon and Crunchbang #! community!

Dari Ubuntu ke Crunchbang! #!

Assalamualaikum WBT pembuka bicara.

Assalamualaikum.

Namun kini dengan adanya BURG (Brand-new Universal loadeR from GRUB), bootloader anda mampu berseri kembali!

  • Radiance

  • Arabic And Freedom

  • Ubuntu2

Alienware M11x Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat

Assalamualaikum. Okeh.

Assalamualaikum.

Desktop Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat Beta

Ubuntu datang lagi! Teringat pada iklan Tora Datang Lagi! zaman aku sekolah rendah dulu. Begitu pantas masa berlalu.

Iklan Tora zaman 90-an

Okeh.

Wallahu'alam.

Ubuntu 9.10 - Karmic Koala 64-bit Flash Player

$ sudo apt-get remove flashplugin-nonfree flashplayer-mozilla flashplugin-installer
$ sudo apt-get purge flashplugin-installer

$ sudo cp libflashplayer.so /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins

Sekian.

Karmic Koala - Anjakan Paradigma!

  • Faster Boot
  • Improved Sound Control
  • Simpler Add/Remove Programs
  • “Ubuntu One provides an enhanced desktop experience, simplifies backup, synchronisation, and sharing of files with an expanded set of features including Tomboy Notes and contacts synchronisation”
  • Upload easily to your favourite social network or photo-sharing sites inlcuding: Flickr, Facebook, Picassa and many others.
  • Ubuntu One – Gives you 2GB of free online storage and you can share those files with friends etc. Really cool!
