Mount MTP Android Device on Linux Crunchbang 11 Waldorf and Debian 7 Wheezy

Fully tested on Crunchbang 11 Waldorf 64-bit using Google Nexus 4.

Today I needed to transfer som pictures from my phone (a Google Nexus 4) to my computer running Crunchbang (based on Debian 7 wheezy). The required packages for this to work has not yet been added to Debian stable to work around this I manually built the required tools from source.

Install required packages

sudo apt-get install libmtp-dev fuse libmtp9 pkg-config libfuse-dev libglib2.0-dev libmad0-dev libid3tag0-dev dh-make autotools-dev

Download source package of mtpfs

Thanks to sdio for pointing out how to use the Debian package tools to create a deb file to install and uninstall instead of doing the traditional ./configure; make; make install.

Untar the archive and then use dh_make to convert the source package in a format used by debian packages:

tar zxf mtpfs-1.1.tar.gz
cd mtpfs-1.1
dh_make -s -f ../mtpfs-1.1.tar.gz

Now build the Deb-file using this command:

fakeroot debian/rules binary

The deb-file will be placed in the same directory as the tar-file, to go upp a directory and install the deb-file:

cd ..
sudo dpkg -i mtpfs_1.1-1_amd64.deb

If you want to uninstall mtpfs then run this command:

sudo dpkg --purge mtpfs

Make sure you are a member of the fuse group so that you are allowed mount filesystems in userspace (You will need to relogin or reboot for the group permissions to take effect):

sudo usermod -aG fuse $USER

Create a directory for mounting the device and mount the the device (Plugin the device first)

mkdir myPhone
mtpfs myPhone

When your done you unmount the phone with this command

fusermount -u myPhone

Steam on Crunchbang 11 Waldorf 64-bit

To anyone stumbled on my blog upon searching for the answer, here you go. Added the fglrx driver part for libgl1 multiarch lib.
Credits to parkerlredd on crunchbang forum.

So after a while of searching for the simplest way to do this I think I have found it.
1. If on a 64bit machine enable multiarch

 sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386  
 sudo apt-get update  

2. Download the steam-install-for-wheezy package and install it

 wget https://github.com/GhostSquad57/Steam-Installer-for-Wheezy/raw/master/steam-debian_1.0.0.45-4_all.deb
sudo dpkg -i steam-debian_1.0.0.45-4_all.deb

If it says its missing a package just
sudo apt-get install -f

3. Now before you run steam you need to install the i386 package that provides libgl.so.1 and matches your graphics card

     If on a 64bit system

 ## for nvidia 
sudo apt-get install libgl1-nvidia-glx:i386

## for fglrx/ati/amd 
sudo apt-get install libgl1-fglrx-glx:i386

     If on 32bit (untested)

 ##for nvidia 
sudo apt-get install libgl1-nvidia-gl

## for fglrx/ati/amd 
 sudo apt-get install libgl1-fglrx-glx

4. Run "steam-debian", let it download the client, and you should then be presented with the login screen.

5. If you get a terminal window at launch that complains about not having jockey-common run

 sudo /usr/lib/steam/steam-debian-depends.sh

6. Enjoy!

PS: If you just so happen to be running sid you can just run "steam" to open steam. The "steam-debian" script isn't even needed!

Crunchbang : Perfect Audio in Alienware m11X with OSS

Assalamualaikum WBT. I have been trying to get my sound works simultaneously on this lappy for a few days now until I recently discovered someone said OSS is better than anything else in comparison of sound quality.

I tried ALSA, compiled from scratch with the latest build but I couldn't get it to play many sounds together simultaneously, let say listening to music and playing game at the same time. I also got my hands into PulseAudio even though the majority in Crunchbang community pretty much hate PA. Now, I know why they want to ban PA so much. I tested PA with YouTube, the video lags with no sound at all until I killed the PA server.

I never thought of trying OSS until today and I glad that I found Martin Baselier's blog about changing alsa to OSS4. Once OSS is installed, my audio works like charm. I got simultaneous audio and awesome and crisp quality out of it. However, I lost my volume system tray icon. Crunchbang uses volumeicon (Maato) by default. I ran volumeicon manually and got this error

~$ volumeicon volumeicon: mixer.c:905: snd_mixer_elem_set_callback: Assertion `mixer' failed. Aborted

In Crunchbang forum, the solution is to remove the ~/.config/volumeicon/volumeicon settings file which resulting to this error instead for me.

volumeicon: asound.c:54: asound_get_volume: Assertion `m_elem != ((void *)0)' failed. Aborted

Then I looked into the official site of volumeicon by Matoo. The solution for me was to remove the default volumeicon using sudo apt-get remove volumeicon and reinstall it from source with enable OSS option.

This is how I did it :

1. Download the source from Matoo website.

2. Extract, and install volumeicon from source with --oss-enable option.

./configure --prefix=/usr --oss-enable 
make 
sudo make install 

3. Taraaa ~~~ You got your volumeicon back.

Dari Ubuntu ke Crunchbang! #!

Assalamualaikum WBT pembuka bicara. Beberapa minggu yang lalu (mungkin jugak dah berbulan) aku ada menulis tentang perpisahan aku dengan Ubuntu dan sistem operasi yang aku gunakan kini ialah Crunchbang. Kenapa Crunchbang? Kerana ia rangup dan meletup? Oh, memang ianya sangat rangup dan MELETUP!

Ianya bermula apabila aku mencari ciri-ciri minimalistic dalam penggunaan linux. Maka, aku telah jatuh cinta dengan si dia yang dipanggil Crunchbang. Berasal dari Ubuntu dan terkini, mengikut jejak langkah Debian sebagai asas. Apa yang menarik ialah tahap kesukaran untuk menggunakan Crunchbang, maka di situlah ilmu akan berkembang. Di mana ada kesusahan, di situ ada pencarian. Dan di mana ada pencarian, di situlah ilmu mendatang dan pasti ada jalan.

Crunchbang sesuai untuk sesiapa sahaja yang sudah mempunyai asas linux dan juga ingin menggunakannya sebagai sistem pengoperasi harian seperti Ubuntu. Tidak dinafikan Ubuntu adalah yang terbaik untuk pengguna yang baru berjinak dengan linux, namun Crunchbang adalah jawapan kepada yang inginkan cabaran setelah melalui fasa Ubuntu.

Ringan, ringkas dan pantas. Itulah Crunchbang!
