Fire on board KD Inderapura
2009/10/08 by Mimi Syed Yusof
KD Inderapura, Royal Malaysian Navy's largest logistics ship caught fire off the coast of Lumut this morning while sailing to Teluk Sebagak, Sabah. The fire, which started at 6.23am, is still raging but under control, said Defence Minister Datuk Seri Zahid Hamidi. The 40-year old ship was one of the two Malaysian naval ships involved in the special mission freeing the MISC vessels Bunga Melati V and Bunga Melati II, which were held hostage by pirates last year.Zahid said senior Naval officials are at the scene to investigate the cause."We are investigating from all angles, including arson and sabotage," he said adding that the fire is under control and there is no oil spill."There were several explosions, I believe seven."We will issue a statement as soon as we get details," he added.
